For the last year, our brother Joichi has been unfolding the Way in our temple community as a Postulant, one who has set out an intention and deep commitment to consider living the life of a Soto Zen Priest. Now, we are all invited to see him through another important gate: committing to on-going practice, study, training, and service as a Novice Priest. Joichi will publicly align himself to our teacher, lineage, and Sangha in an ancient and precious ritual, integral to the tradition of our school but also alive and embodied in the heart he has laid bare.

When we encounter conversations around race, justice, and inequity, we also meet our own suffering, karma, and the vow for liberation for all beings, ourselves included. As so many of our communities are gripped by often challenging discussions around race, we offer these Community Circles as spaces for group reflection, skill building, and mutual support around the unfolding of race, racism, and this important moment of reckoning in which we now find ourselves. These groups are meant to meet different individuals at different stages of their path in unfolding these topics.

For the last year, Jakuen has been unfolding the Way in our temple community as a Postulant, one who has set out an intention to consider living the life of a Priest. This Sunday, he will pass through another gate, committing to on-going practice, study, training, and service as a Novice Priest. This ceremony is not only a great encouragement for the ordainee, but for the entire Sangha.

Rohatsu Sesshin, a 7 day silent meditation intensive, is our most rigorous of the year. “Rohatsu” means the eighth day of the twelfth month, when Shakyamuni Buddha was said to awaken to the Way upon seeing the morning star. Registration is required for meals and overnight stay. Please fill out this registration form and send it to office@buddhaeye.org, or drop it off in person at the temple.
